A body of work created specifically for #CountMeIn, a project designed to raise awareness around the 2020 Census.

A drawing of the route taken to create Census Block. Different colors represent different times of day that video was taken – blue for morning, then yellow and orange for afternoon, and magenta and purple for dusk.

In 2019, Art In Residence was asked to join the #CountMeIn project with the Lancaster MOAH under lead artist Robin Rosenthal. After a series of community engagements, which I documented for AIR, we designed an installation called “As a day, a Decade” that envisions the census as a way to raise the volume of the community members’ voices: the larger the number of census participants, the greater the representation for the community. A single channel video work, Census Block (2019, HD Video, 45:20) documents the geographic area of the census block on Census Day 2020. The audio comprises recordings from community members at various workshops and engagements over the course of the project.

In addition, I created a series of digital collages combine archival photographs of historical sites within the census block with contemporary color photographs (courtesy of Karl Peterson and the Antelope Valley Rural Museum).
